High Karat Gold Jewelry By Whitney Abrams

I love the Renaissance and Classical periods of time. My jewels reflect that sensibility. They are a combination of rich colors and textures. They have a very regal appearance, but also and elegant simple design.

What Kind Of Materials Are You Using?
18K and 22K gold, intaglios, cameos, faceted stones, ancient coins

What Got You Started Jewelry Crafting?
I inherited my love of jewelry from my grandmothers. We were always gifted with jewels for every occasion. I used to make stained glass windows and sculptures, then my pieces kept getting smaller, so I went in the direction of fine metals. I took courses in college, then continued to find studio space to work in, in Chicago. I then took classes in Ireland, Italy and New York, where I eventually moved and became a full-time jeweler.

How and/or Where Do You Sell Your Jewelry?
My jewelry is sold through my Chicago store located in the Gold Coast just a couple blocks from Michigan Avenue. It is also sold through my website (www.whitneyabramsjewelry.com).
My jewelry can also be found at Shaw Jewelry in Northeast Harbor, ME starting in June of 2011.
The Walter’s Jewelry Fair, Baltimore MD ~ November 4-6, 2011

What Is Your Source of Inspiration?
I take my inspiration for each piece from the stones and carvings, I find. I rarely render a piece before constructing it, I usually just dive into the work. I also have a passion for books on jewelry. Over the years I have amassed a collection of almost 800 books on the subject, which I find to be very inspiring.

Why Handmade Jewelry?
Jewelry is such a personal object for the wearer. Hand making each piece allows me to put my personal touch into each creation. Hand made jewelry is more special and allows the wearer to have more of a connection to their piece.
